I neither defend nor condemn these practices. My first take is that they're a small part of the residual problems that our 21st century technologies create. In an Internet world with cyber-criminals, I am not surprised that our law enforcement officials (and I don't envy their day-to-day challenges with criminal activity) have needed to snoop on the bad guys this way. My issue is how they discriminate between the bad guys and the rest of us.
