Gmail, Google Drive, and other Google Apps experiencing limited outages
Sounds like just one more thing to complain about. Get over it. This stuff is frigging complicated and really expensive to boot!
Sure, the Verizons and Googles and Facebooks of the world are all making gobs of money with these technologies, but if any of you think for one minute that any of what they do is easy . . .
As we do in other corners of the tech world, we measure up-time and express it as a decimal like .9999 - four nines- which is 99.99% of the time. Or .99999 - five nines - which is 99.999% of the time - UP that is. Working, functional, live.
So we take the number of minutes in a day (60 x 24 = 1440) and multiply it by the number of days in a year (1440 x 365 = 525,600 minutes) The result (for .9999 up-time is 525,548 minutes a year or 52.56 minutes without service annually.
How long were Google services down last year? Do we or should we require similar .9999 or even .999 up-time performance for services that are, essentially free to us?
